Risk Factors for Cuboid Syndrome

Cuboid syndrome occurs when the cuboid bone in the foot moves down and out of alignment with the calcaneus bone. This can happen due to sudden injury or from repetitive overuse from activities and sports that involve a lot of jumping, changing directions, or sprinting. Symptoms of cuboid syndrome include foot pain, swelling, tenderness, weakness, and a decreased range of motion. Certain risk factors can make cuboid syndrome more likely. These include being overweight or obese, having pronated feet, wearing poorly-fitted shoes, training on uneven surfaces, and having a previous or concurrent ankle or foot sprain. The most common causes of cuboid syndrome include:

  • Injury – The most common cause of this ailment is an ankle sprain.
  • Repetitive Strain – Tension placed through the peroneus longus muscle from repetitive activities such as jumping and running may cause excessive traction on the bone causing it to sublux.
  • Altered Foot Biomechanics – Most people suffering from cuboid subluxation have flat feet.

Symptoms

A common symptom of cuboid syndrome is pain along the outside of the foot which can be felt in the ankle and toes. This pain may create walking difficulties and may cause those with the condition to walk with a limp.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of cuboid syndrome is often difficult, and it is often misdiagnosed. X-rays, MRIs and CT scans often fail to properly show the cuboid subluxation. Although there isn’t a specific test used to diagnose cuboid syndrome, your podiatrist will usually check if pain is felt while pressing firmly on the cuboid bone of your foot.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are ice therapy, rest, exercise, taping, and orthotics.

Athlete's Foot Symptoms

The Three Types of Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprains occur when the ligaments that help hold the ankle bones together are twisted, overstretched, or torn. There are three main types of ankle sprains. A lateral ankle sprain occurs when there is an injury to the ligaments on the outside of the ankle. This is often the result of turning the toes in while pointing them downward during an injury. A medial ankle sprain occurs when there is an injury to the ligaments on the inside of the ankle. This is typically the result of turning the toes out while pointing them upwards during an injury. A syndesmotic sprain occurs when the front or back lower ligaments of the ankle are injured. This can occur from pointing the toes too far up and out during an injury. All About Bruised Heels

If you are an athlete, you may be familiar with bruised heels. This can be a painful and potentially debilitating injury. It can occur from both acute trauma and from repetitive impacts to the foot. Some people have specific risk factors that can increase their likelihood of getting a bruised heel. These risk factors include excessive body weight, older age, wearing poorly cushioned or worn-out running shoes, a sudden increase in training, training on a hard or uneven surface, and walking or training barefoot. If you have a bruised heel, you can reduce pain and swelling by following the PRICE acronym. Protect, rest, ice, compress, and elevate the affected foot. Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.
